Have you written a play or pantomime and had it performed? Do you dream of other groups performing your work across the UK or further afield?
If the answer to these questions is yes, then we may be able to help. Beercott Books is a small independent publisher based not far from Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire. Initially specialising in craft and theatre-related books, they have recently ventured in other genres.
However, theatre still remains one of the core focuses of the firms’ books, thanks in no small part to owner Simons’ forty plus years of experience in both amateur and professional productions. With this in mind, we are now looking to build a catalogue of works for performance, initially concentrating on plays and pantomimes.
Of course, if writing for performance was that easy, everyone would be doing it, right? Right. Even those who write for a living don’t always get it right. Over the years we have seen some dreadful professional productions, but equally some absolutely fantastic productions written and performed by people who have a ‘normal’ day job. It is these writers we are looking to help progress to the next level, and have their work performed by others.
When a script is submitted to us for consideration, it is read by several members of the team and we gather their feedback to help make a decision whether to proceed any further. We always give feedback to the writers, even if we decide not to publish their work.
If we like what we read, then we will ask for a full copy of the script so we can make a final assessment. Once read, we will discuss any necessary points with the author before issuing a contract for publication and performance rights. This is where the hard work starts for us, as we now have to convert the files we have received in to print ready files. This involves re-formatting the text into our preferred layout and full typesetting of each line on every page. The process can be quite involved and take several weeks. Once we are happy we produce digital proofs which we pass to editors and proof-readers for checking, then to the author for approval. Only after we have all comments back and have fixed any remaining issues do we send the files off to get physical proofs made. If these pass the grade then we press the button for publication.
Once we publish a script it becomes available for people to purchase worldwide through bookshops, online stores as well as our own website. Licences for performance can then be handled by us too, and the authors start to earn royalties both on script sales and also performance licenses.
So, if you have a script you would like us to consider, send a sample and a brief synopsis to us at submissions [at] beercottbooks [dot] co [dot] uk.
